Tax return preparers now will pay a lower fee when applying for a new or renewed PTIN, the Internal Revenue Service said.
In temporary rules (T.D. 9742) and proposed rules (REG-121496-15), the IRS said it had recalculated its costs of providing the services associated with the PTIN downward to $33. Coupled with the reduced costs for IRS, however, is a higher fee paid directly to a third-party vendor that handles the applications: the vendor fee is increasing from $14.25 for original applications and $13 for renewal applications to $17 for both new and renewal applications. Bottom line: the total fee for a new or renewal PTIN will be $50.
At the same time, the IRS said the annual PTIN application and renewal period, which historically has begun on Oct. 15, has been postponed this year to November 1. The new fees will apply to applications filed on that date and afterward.
