PTIN Enforcement

Tax Pro Today (October 9, 2015) has reported that the Treasury Inspector General for the Tax Administration is now urging the IRS’s Return Preparer Office (RPO) to attend to the thousands of PTIN holders who may not be in compliance with established regulations. According to the RPO, there are nearly 20,000 recipients that may not meet the requirements necessary to hold a PTIN registration. Among that group of preparers, there are individuals who have not filed their personal returns for at least a year, and a smaller number who have not for five years or more. These irregularities have resulted in over three hundred and sixty million dollars of taxes due, as of January 26, 2015.
