August 23, 2012 Al Giovetti's nominating speech for second vice president

Board of Governors, Council of Delegates, Guests

I am Al Giovetti, a member of NSA for 32 years. It is with a great desire to serve and a commitment to our success that I present myself to you as a candidate for second vice president.
Bob Fukuhara encourages NSA members to brag about NSA. Members need to get excited about the benefits.  The excitement will spread, increasing membership, member retention, and dues revenues, which will help the State Directors get the support and funding that they need to do their job.

Every member needs to get excited and brag about NSA.  What would it take to get you this excited?

As long as there are large national and regional firms, there will  be legislative and regulatory challenges to the small accountant. We need to remain ever vigilant in our fight for practice rights for tax and financial accountants.  We need to support the rights of all practitioners to practice in the field they have chosen.

Credentials are important in protecting our members’ practice rights. We commend those ACAT credential holders who voluntarily submit themselves to examination, education, experience, and ethics requirements without receiving any benefit in licensure.   A few states recognize ACAT credentials as prerequisite for licensure.

NSA members and staff have established long term cooperation with the Internal Revenue Service, while our state organizations work with the state revenue agencies.  We need to keep working on these national and state committees, such as IRPAC and IRSAC, and boards of accountancy.  We applaud those independent observers of state boards of accountancy who write reports and monitor activities.

NSA and affiliated state organizations (or ASOs) need to work more closely and more cooperatively to develop and implement programs that benefit both the national and state organizations.  We need to package needed services to make them more economical and effective.
The greatest value of NSA, to us personally and our practices, is the friends that we have made all over the country.  We can turn to our friends for information and support.  We can get different perspectives on tax research and accounting methods.  Our friends fill the gap between what we learn in a seminar and what we do every day to earn money.  Most of us have stayed in NSA because of these friendships.

We all remember that one NSA member who came up to us at the Leadership Networking and Legislative strategy conference or annual convention and made us a friend.  Our friend offered to help us when we needed help.  Our friend has been there for us through the years, encouraging us to get a credential, to pass an examination, to volunteer for NSA, to take a course, or just spent time with us and had fun.
We need to step up and be a friend to other members and put the fun back in NSA.  I encourage you to step out of your comfort zone, get on MemberConnect, talk to the first timers, leave a question or an answer on Tax Talk, volunteer to help out on another project or committee, or just sit down and share some conversation or a meal.  In the end we will all benefit.

I am Al Giovetti. My service to NSA has been an honor and a privilege. I humbly request your vote for second vice president of NSA.

Please vote for Al.
