Billie Lovett CPA, is my unofficial official moniker. I am the principal at Kathleen R. Lovett CPA, AC, located in rural North Central West Virginia. For over 30 years, I have specialized in payroll, tax, and accounting services to small businesses, largely construction contractors and landlords, as well as the needs of the business owners and other individuals. I have been a speaker on QuickBooks software and tax and accounting issues for several professional organizations and have participated in live local radio programs I called, “Try to Stump the CPA’. As editor, I have written numerous articles for the WV ASO’s, (West Virginia Public Accountants Association (WVPAA)) newsletter, The Bean Counter. I have served several years on the IRS’ Greater Pittsburgh Working Together Steering Committee. I was honored with the WVPAA’s Distinguished Service Award in 2007. I have been a past President of the WVPAA, (2005-2006), a past VP (2004-2005), and have served as its Treasurer since 2010. I have been NSA’s WV state Director since 2007.
Billie is the nickname I received at birth because I was not a boy and therefore was not named William for my paternal grandfather. I was born and reared, at least for the first 16 years, in central NJ and upon my father’s retirement from Greyhound Lines, and the completion of my junior year of high school, we moved to my mother’s old stomping grounds, near Morgantown, WV. I graduated from my mother’s high school alma mater 41 years after she did. I got married in 1973 and have remained happily married to the same man. I am a 1981 graduate of Texas A&I University in Kingsville TX, with a major in Accounting. My husband served in the United States Navy which attributed to our extensive travel around the USA due to his changes in duty stations. We have lived in WV, TN, WA, TX, and VA. I have one brother.
I enjoy watching and reading mysteries and historical fiction, crocheting, doing counted cross-stitch, assembling jigsaw puzzles, solving as well as constructing themed crosswords, acrostics, cryptograms, word searches, Sudoku, and other pencil puzzles for The Bean Counter, as well as for my own personal use, my company’s website, and for other commercial and non-profit enterprises. With my husband, I have done many DIY projects during, and since, the construction of our log home. I have been an avid cribbage and pinochle player for over 45 years (giving hints as to my age, here), and in high school, (many, many years ago), played the trombone and sousaphone. My favorite subject in both grade and high school was mathematics and, if you can believe this, I absolutely loved the word problems.
Over the years, I have been owned by numerous cats and several dogs, and once, as a small child, gave milk to the goldfish in the family aquarium, because, “They looked thirsty!” I like most 4-footed wild and domesticated mammals, most birds, but I don’t care to be startled by amphibians, reptiles, or insects, excluding ladybugs, fireflies, and butterflies. I like flower gardening, but have a somewhat brown thumb when it comes to the non-bush variety of plants, ie. the flowering kind. My favorite artists include M.C.Escher, Mary Engelbreit, Jim Shore, the Hautman brothers, P. Buckley Moss, and Thomas Fracé (now there’s an eclectic group of artists).
My husband and I learned to ballroom dance just before it became so popular due to “Dancing with the Stars.” We have voluntarily instructed several beginner classes at a local NFP, Arthurdale Heritage, Inc. (AHI). During my 15 plus years of association with them, I served as AHI’s president, VP, treasurer, board member, and as several committee chairs.
I have been described as the owner of a very dry wit, and have been known to be somewhat sarcastic, on occasion, and sometimes on no occasion.
Prior to carpal tunnel surgery, I used to bowl regularly. I retired from the sport in 1987 with a 181 average, just after my Women’s International Bowling Congress Tournament Singles win in Hartford, CT with a 656 scratch 3-game series. My highest single game ever was a 287 during league play in Oak Harbor, WA.
I am an amateur genealogist and I am currently working on my father’s line. It seems he has a grandfather who arrived here by an alien ship as I have not been able to find his birth date or parents in any records.
There are many things I either cannot do, won’t do, or don’t want to learn to do. I cannot sew, knit, mountain climb, water or snow ski, or spelunk. I sunburn way too easily to do water or other outdoor sports. I am not a swimmer, but in my 30s, I did learn to stay afloat. I don’t do motor-sports unless they are indoors, (there’s not very many of those). I once drove my husband’s motorcycle into a pine tree. I am not artistic and therefore do not paint, draw, doodle, or watercolor. My best stick figure ever was drawn using a compass and a straightedge.
For whatever reason, if you want to know more about me, please contact me in person, or via e-mail.
