NSA Responds to IRS IT Modernization Plan

Alexandria, VA, April 18, 2019 — This afternoon, the IRS released IR-2019-77, announcing a multi-year plan to modernize and update the entity’s IT systems.

According to the IRS statement, the drivers for these changes are grounded in customer service for both the consumer and the tax and accounting professional.

National Society of Accountants (NSA) CEO John Rice responded to the news. “The NSA agrees with the philosophy of the modernization initiative. Our organization has been a vocal advocate for customer service since its inception seventy-four years ago.”

When asked for further comments, Rice cited recent data breaches at Facebook and Microsoft Outlook as prime examples of the vulnerability of large data-processing entities.

“The planned improvements in IT, identity protection, and information systems security at the IRS are vital. They are central to serving the public and tax and accounting profession in the digital age. But small tax practices must also do their part to secure their data and that of their clients,” said Rice.

He added that the NSA will continue to be a voice in support of the IRS being provided with the funding it needs to serve the public and Federal Government. “Without adequate funding, no improvements can take place. The IRS must be given the resources to change with the times, and NSA looks forward to the realization of the IT modernizations.”
