NSA Annual Meeting - CPE Session - Fraud Detection and Prevention

When:  Aug 21, 2014 from 03:10 PM to 04:50 PM (ET)
Thursday, August 21 • 3:10pm - 4:50pm
Fraud Detection and Prevention
This fraud detection and prevention seminar will overview the history of financial fraud and examine several recent fraud cases involving Bernie Madoff, Joseph Caramadre and a number of tax resolution firms. Additional topics of discussion will include:
  • forensic audit approaches used by IRS during the examination process,
  • dealing with IRS Criminal Investigation Division, and
  • dealing with clients that have questionable business practices.

A short case study will be presented at the conclusion of the discussion where attendees will be asked to “think like a crook” to fabricate a set of financial statements that would “outsmart” a good accountant.

At the conclusion of this class, you will be able to:

  • Use forensic techniques that can be applied to a company’s accounting systems and financial statements to identify where fraud may exist,
  • Work with clients to reduce and minimize fraud even if there are minimal employees,
  • Understand, through several examples, how fraudulent financial statements can escape auditor detection.
