MSATP Taxation of Crowdfunding

More Americans are turning to alternative forms of raising money for businesses, creative projects, inventions and charity. The digital platforms for raising money online from a large number of people have increased exponentially over the last 10 years leading to questions regarding the legality of online fundraising and the taxation of such activity. This program will discuss the tax and policy issues associated with crowdfunding. The presenter will cover whether proceeds from various crowdfunding campaigns are includable in income, whether expenses related to crowdfunding campaigns are deductible, and when crowdfunding proceeds might be excludable from income as a gift or charitable donation. The program will also discuss the tax issues associated with crowdfunding campaigns that provide equity to those funding the project or business.
