Practical Aspects of Representing Unmarried Cohabitating Couples

Includes a Live Event on 05/10/2016 at 2:00 PM (EDT)

A recent Pew Research report noted the number of single Americans who desire marriage has steadily dropped for decades. Last year the Census Bureau reported a a 93 year low for the US marriage rate, which included same-sex couples who now have the opportunity to wed. Many couples are choosing to remain unmarried for a variety of reasons many of which relate to the economic impact of their nuptials; this is especially true for high income earning and net worth individuals.

This session will explore income and transfer tax issues as well as financial planning for couple's who cohabitate but choose not to marry. Additionally we will address issues specific to representing individuals and couples from the LGBTQ community and the basics of how to create an LGBTQ niche practice.

  • Explain the importance of a Cohabitation Agreement and other legal agreements between unmarried couples
  • Identify tax and economic issues specific to unmarried couples and the LGBTQ community
  • Demonstrate how to quantify the economic impact of marriage
