What Happens in Vegas: IRS Tax Forum Recap

Well, here I am at 37,000 feet flying home and I am hoping that the tired adage of "what happens in Vegas; stays in Vegas" does not hold true for the thousands of attendees of the IRS Nationwide Tax Forum that just concluded in Las Vegas, Nevada. There was a tremendous amount of great information and continuing education that was taking place and it would be a real shame if all that stayed in Vegas and didn't make its way back to the offices of the practitioners who attended from all over the United States and even parts of Canada. There was also a large showing of vendors that were demonstrating their products designed to increase our productivity and improve our efficiency; making our tax seasons a little less taxing and our off seasons a bit more profitable.

The booth for the National Society of Accountants was busy with tax professionals renewing their memberships and new members looking for a great place to network and gain year round support for their practice. Our booth volunteers were high level members of NSA; current President Sharon Cook and District X Governor, Linda Cuddie. The highly capable NSA staff members managing the booth were Claire Berlin and Julene Joy; they did a great job of working with prospective and current members answering all the questions from renewing membership to getting the most out of our member benefits.

As for me; I had the pleasure of working with Kathy Hettick delivering two fine presentations on the Real World Schedule D and E issues. We had full attendance in every session and enjoyed meeting hundreds of attendees that had great questions and comments. We both had several opportunities to address practitioners concerns over taking the RTRP exam (just do it!) and hopefully assisting with some vexing problems faced by attendees in their own practices. Kathy and I were also able to address the recent rumor started in San Diego that I was Kathy’s dad! Hey now, the grey hair is from having my own practice!

I am looking forward to the next two Forums in Chicago and New York where I will get to work with Tina Lee; another member of our NSA speaker team. The Forums offer so many great opportunities I really encourage you to consider them a fine way to round out your continuing education needs.
