RENEWING YOUR CREDENTIALS

To renew your credential, each certificant must pay an annual fee and attest to meeting the requirements for each credential held. All renewals are subject to audit to verify compliance with continuing education requirements.

Renewal Cycle

Annual dues must be paid by June 30 and a sixty (60) day grace period exists before reinstatement is required. Dues received after June 30 are subject to late fees of up to $50.

Reinstatement

If you do not timely pay your annual dues, fail to meet the CPE requirements, or do not adhere to the Code of Ethics, your credential(s) are suspended and any printed certificates in your possession must be returned. You have five years from the date of suspension to request reinstatement before you’re required to retake the exam.

Accredited status may be reinstated in one of three ways:

  1. In the case of the ABA, you may sit and satisfactorily complete the examination at any time following the expiration of the accredited status.
  2. You may submit the Reinstatement Form along with the reinstatement fee ($75 for one credential, $100 for 2-4 credentials) + all current year’s renewal fees. In addition to the fees, you must demonstrate evidence of the completion of acceptable continuing education in the 12 months immediately prior to the date of filing for reinstatement.
    • The CPE required for reinstatement in accountancy (ABA) is 40 hours over the last 12 months, 8 hours of which must be in accounting and related subjects, 8 hours must be in taxation, and 2 hours in ethics.
    • The CPE required for reinstatement of the Accredited Tax Advisor (ATA) is 30 hours over the last 12 months in taxation and related subjects and 2 hours in ethics.
    • The CPE required for reinstatement of the Accredited Tax Preparer (ATP) is 24 hours over the last 12 months in taxation and related subjects and 2 hours in ethics.
  3. You may be reinstated by ACAT Board action on an individual basis only for extreme or special circumstances.

What courses are accepted for continuing professional education? How is one (1) CPE calculated?

While ACAT does not regulate continuing professional education, we follow standards generally observed by CPE sponsors within the industry. Accordingly, one (1) CPE credit is calculated based on a 50-minute hour. To claim CPE for webinars and other live activities, there must be periodic polling taken to ensure you are actively attending the session for credit. We will generally observe standards set forth by the National Registry of CPE Sponsors.

Additionally, the IRS has established certain standards for their own continuing education requirements. California has done the same with the California Tax Education Council (CTEC). ACAT accepts courses that meet the standards established by these entities.

If you have any questions on the eligibility of a course for credit, please contact us with additional information on the educational sponsor and program you’re interested in.

I've earned a lot of additional CPE this year than what's required. Can I roll forward these hours towards next year?

No. The CPE requirements per credential are the minimum required in order to maintain your professional credential. We encourage all certificants to exceed this requirement to ensure they offer quality service to the public.
